Provide the location first

Share the road, direction of travel and a reliable landmark. If the vehicle is in a dangerous position, prioritise your safety and follow instructions from the authorities or road operator. Do not walk along a fast road to look for fuel.

Identify the fuel and vehicle

Check petrol or diesel using the manufacturer information rather than the filler cap colour alone. Give the vehicle model and describe the last symptoms. An engine stopping does not always mean an empty tank: the assistance provider may need to establish whether another fault explains the breakdown.

Confirm what can be arranged

Fuel delivery depends on access, the vehicle and the situation. In some cases, towing to a station or workshop is more appropriate. Confirm conditions and the destination before collection. Once the car is moving again, check its range before continuing a long journey.
